Media Industry Creating

The assignment we were giving in today's lesson of Critical Approaches (17/9/14) was to create an imaginary musician or band. We had to look closely at target audience and genre of music as they are both main elements in the assignment. The task is to be completed in groups of two, with together merging all of our ideas into one.

Rock Music

I decided to create a band with the music style of rock as personally that's genre of music I enjoy but also its such specific music style that I feel I'd be able to create a band which is unique and identifiable; the audience will be able to tell straight away that this is a rock band. I also decided to go with rock because its genre which will always be popular and important, the idea of 'rock will never die' is significant. There's also so many rock bands in the industry that I will be able to get inspiration from them and create a band will similarities and what an audience would be attracted to.

What is Rock Music?

Rock music, sometimes also known as "rock and roll," is a style of music that became popular in the 1950's in America and Europe. It is primarily based on older musical styles, such as the rhythm and blues music originated by African American performers such as Chuck Berry and Little Richard, with a heavy focus on guitar, drums, and powerful vocals. One of the earliest and most famous performers in the early days of rock was Elvis Presley, who shocked the world with his suggestive dancing and powerful music. He became an instant phenomenon, and led the way for many other performers over the decades to come. In the 1960s, the Beatles were another hugely successful and popular rock music group, also inspired by rhythm and blues songs and by the work of other early British rock performers, such as Cliff Richard. Over the years, rock music has branched out into a wide variety of styles. Folk rock, such as that made popular by Bob Dylan in the 1960s, often featured acoustic guitars and socially conscious lyrics, many with anti-war sentiments. Psychedelic rock, such as that played by the Grateful Dead, Pink Floyd, and the Doors, featured often dissonant music that was heavily influenced by the use of drugs such as LSD. Progressive rock bands, such as the Moody Blues, Rush, and Yes, experimented with a wide range of instruments, and often included improvisational musical solos that could last for 10 or even 20 minutes.

Rock has also led the way for other music forms, such as heavy metal, which features extreme guitar sound and heavy distortion. Some of the earliest bands that could be classified as heavy metal are Led Zeppelin and Black Sabbath. Both bands started out in the mid-1970s. Their heavy form of music has paved the way for other heavy metal bands, including Metallica and Megadeth. Today, the term "rock music" is used to refer to a wide range of musical forms, including anything from soft pop to heavy metal. The name has essentially become a default term for any style of music that does not automatically fit into another category, such as R&B, country, or classical. The form has changed significantly since the days of Elvis Presley, but the term can still refer to his songs as easily as they can refer to more recent bands like Nirvana or Pearl Jam.

I also want it to be similar to present rock bands to get the youthful feel to the band as I don't want it be seem to dated and in the past.

Rock Music Mindmap

I created this mind map to get ideas for my rock band, I looked closely at past and present rock music influences, fashion icons in the rock industry, different forms of rock and the genres conventions.

Research

British Photographic Industry - http://www.bpinews.co.uk/

Current most popular genres:

Pop music secure a 33.5% of the UK’s albums market during last year - the genre’s second biggest share since 1999.

Mumford And Sons’ Babel and Coldplay’s Mylo Xyloto helped rock increase its share of album sales in 2012 to 31.3%, up from 29.4% the previous year.

Calvin Harris’ 18 Months and David Guetta’s Nothing But The Beat helped dance music’s market share increase to 6.3% share However, on the singles market, dance music remained static at 13.8%.

I got this information from: http://www.officialcharts.com/chart-news/pop-is-still-the-uks-favourite-genre-of-music-1814/.

Rock is the most popular music genre from 2008 (102,324 digital sales). The most popular genre by far.

Then pop (34, 228 digital sales), followed by urban (27, 247 digital sales). Afterwards dance (17, 093 digital sales) and legend (14, 908 digital sales). The other genres like jazz, country, reggae and folk were all under 10, 000 digital sales.

I got this information from:  https://www.bpi.co.uk/assets/files/Digital%20Album%20Sales%20by%20Genre_Sept%2008.pdf.

This webpage print screen from BPI's official website shows that rock still is the most popular genre from 2008 till present day.

This is slightly surprising as it's not a mainstream genre; not everybody listens to rock whereas most people have to listen to pop as its the most popular genre played on mainstream radios.

Rock music generated a third (33.8 per cent) of all the UK album sales during the 12-month period.

Of the top 10,000 best-selling albums in 2013, over 4,000 - 40 per cent - were classified as Rock.

Over half of all Rock music purchased in the UK last year was defined as Contemporary Rock (18.8 per cent out of the 33.8 per cent figure). (I got all of the following information from http://www.bpi.co.uk/home/rock-turns-the-table-on-pop.aspx).

This website shows radio popularity and what listeners listen the most to.

Radio stations under the BBC are the most popular and they have multiple different stations to cater for different genres; radio 1 suits pop genre, radio 2 suits alternative ect.

Other stations like Kerrang! (53,502 popularity) and Magic UK (53,502 popularity) are also popular.

Music Week is an informative, UK record industry magazine/website.

This is one of the most popular articles of the week from Music Week, its about the most popular music on the iTunes chart.

The genre of which is the most popular on the charts is pop. The top single is from a pop genre, the second is from electronic (slightly less popular),  sale figures of 5000 physical unit were considered a “hit,” whereas a bit earlier it would’ve required a few hundred thousand units.

7 out of 10 of the top 10 iTunes chart were from a pop genre, the other 3 were from a electronic genre. This is surprising as none of the hits were from a rock genre which is the most popular genre of music.

This is a statistic graphic from The Statistic Portal which is a popular website that shares statistic information from multiple different industries. The industry I looked at to find statistics from was the music industry as I wanted to find statistics which relate to my chosen genre of music; rock.

This statistic graph is about popular music within teenagers, I felt this was a good statistic to use as the band I'm creating is aimed at that age range. The full question was 'If you could only listen to one genre of music for the rest of your life, what would it be?', I thought this question was good as its informative and interesting.

The statistic presents the preferred music genres of the average U.S. teenage internet user from August 2012. During the Stage of Life survey, 15.3 percent of respondents stated they would choose country music if they could only listen to one genre of music for the rest of their lives which was surprising as country music is more aimed at older people, although their are some country artists who are aimed at teenagers and young people like Taylor Swift and .Lady Antebellum. The most popular response was Pop music with 18.4 percent, this wasn't surprising as popular music is always aimed at teenage audience as usually teens are the audience who buy chart music which is from a mainstream genre.

Another popular response was Rock (the chosen genre of my band) with 13.1 percent of respondents, I wasn't surprised with these results as rock will and has always been a very popular genre with a certain audience due to its unique and specific sound, look, audience ect. Rock music is aimed at the young and old which makes it a very powerful genre as it branches out to everyone.

Continuing my research I look into an article relating to rock music. The article was found on the Forbes website which was published on the 7th of July 2014. The article was about Kiss frontman Gene Simmons opinions on the ever changing rock industry. The article highlighted some of the big quotes the rock legend has recently said one of them was 'rock music is dead', which is an extremely controversial comment as rock has always been a significant part of the music industry with old artists still being popular and new artists coming in creating a new era of the renowned industry.

The article also focused on the current state of rock music and on the perceived financial difficulty young bands face. Gene Simmons also said “It’s very sad for new bands, my heart goes out to them. They just don’t have a chance. If you play guitar, it’s almost impossible.” Simmons is referring to the notoriously low fees paid by streaming music services like Spotify and Pandora, as well as an internet-bred culture that has little respect for intellectual property law. “The masses do not recognize file-sharing and downloading as stealing because there’s a copy left behind for you,” Simmons says.  “It’s not that copy that’s the problem, it’s the other one that someone received but didn't pay for.”

Finally the last section of research I did was about rock in the radio industry. I searched around on the internet for radio stations which specialize in rock music and I found several including NME, Radio 6 and
Planet Rock but the station which stood out for me was Kerrang as it didn't just specialize in one section of rock but in fact several.

Kerrang play multiple different types of rock music which caters for every audiences. It's a good rock radio station as doesn't just play music but also gives the audience news related to rock music, upcoming events and competitions.

Graph

This graph was created to show the statistics and data I collected from several music and statistics websites. All the date found is relating to the rock music genre, the amount of people who listen to rock and other genres. This is the graph which was created below:

The data shows how much rock music is listened to when it comes to which platform is brought up. In the first column which was statistics from The Statistics Portal it showed that in 2012 77% of festival goers in the UK out of the respondents listen to rock music. Making rock music the most popular genre of festival music by far which is surprising as a lot of festivals special in dance and alternative music styles. The second column which was from the British Phonographic Industry shows how many album sales there were per genre, 33.8% of the album sales were from the rock genre, again making it the most popular genre (even making it more popular then mainstream music). The last column was about band research, I researched bands which would be similar to my style of band. The one I decided to look at was Nivana which was an extremely popular rock band in the late 80's, 90's and even still today. Using data from last.fm, it told me that Nirvana got 47,585, of a total of 80,000 a month in September, and of a whole total of 3,911,247 listeners all together - making it 59.4%. From the data discovered it shows that rock is a very popular and powerful style of music. It also shows that rock mostly always comes up on top, being the most popular through album sales and audience favoritism.

Chosen Genre of Rock

The genre of rock we want to go for with our band is Classic Heavy Rock which is genre revolved around legendary rock musicians and bands. Classic rock is a genre of music that combines a particular guitar-driven rock sound with a particular era of time. The classic rock era began in early 1960's with rock n' roll based bands like The Beatles and Rolling Stones, diversifying into bands like Led Zeppelin and The Doors. Some other examples of bands and musicians under the Classic Heavy Rock genre consist of David Bowie, Fleetwood Mac, Aerosmith, The Who, Kiss and AC/DC.

Band Name

This decision was one of the most hardest to decided as it had to fit with the theme but also be unique and memorable. We wanted the band name to be exciting and something fresh but still have the same connotations of a stereotypical rock band. We also thought it would be a good idea to have a band name which symbolizes the definition of rock and also be able to create a logo which would go relate to it and look interesting and striking.

Band Name Mind Map

This mind map shows the idea creating for the rock bands name, one half of the mind map showed things related to the names like religion drugs ect and also what the bands name had to be for example the most successful rock artists use a name which is unique, catchy ect. The other half of the mind map was the actual names Ellie and I thought of, we decided to go down the route of dark, rebellious names which symbolize rock music. Some examples of names we thought of were Black Acid, Black Religious before finally deciding on Maleficent Youth.

Maleficent Youth: We finally decided on the band name of Maleficent Youth as we felt it truly symbolized rock music, it also is a name which is unique, fresh and not a copy of any other band's name. The definition of maleficent is causing or capable of producing evil or mischief; harmful or baleful, its also a word which is associated with Satan. Maleficent defines the bad of something, its all about evilness which is something a lot of rock bands use, rock music is associated with darkness and the idea of 'singing out their sins'. The definition of youth is the condition or quality of being young, an early period of development or existence and the time of life between childhood and maturity. The two words are completely different which is purposely done to create a contrast; good and bad, life and death ect. The two words together creates a powerful and emotive feel.

Band Inspiration for Maleficent Youth

Fleetwood Mac

The band Fleetwood Mac has inspired me for Maleficent Youth as I wanted to create a band which was mixture of females and males as I wanted it to be more unique because the rock industry is very male dominated. Fleetwood Mac are a British-American rock band formed in 1967 in London. The two most successful periods for the band were during the late 1960s British blues boom, when they were led by guitarist Peter Green and achieved a UK number one with "Albatross"; and from 1975 to 1987, as a more pop-oriented act, featuring Christine McVie, Lindsey Buckingham and Stevie Nicks. Fleetwood Mac's second album after the incorporation of Buckingham and Nicks, 1977's Rumours, produced four U.S. Top 10 singles (including Nicks' song "Dreams"), and remained at No.1 on the American albums chart for 31 weeks, as well as reaching the top spot in various countries around the world. To date the album has sold over 45 million copies worldwide, making it the fourth-highest-selling album of all time. The band orginated in London, the genre is mostly rock but also covers blues, blues rock, pop rock and soft rock. The years active were 1967-95, then 1997 to present day, the labels they were have previously been under are Blue Horizon, Reprise, Warner Bros and LMJS Productions. The current band members are Mick Fleetwood, John McVie, Christine McVie, Lindsey Buckingham and Stevie Nicks.

Second Band Name

We decided to choose a second band name as when we present our ideas to a focus group we want to have a variety of names which the group can decide from and then further on after we've found our responses we'd choose the most popular name. Our first chosen name was Maleficent Youth which our favourite as we felt it related to rock music and was unique. The second name we decided was Black Acid which we felt was an equally unique name but also catchy and rememberable. The actual definition for Black Acid as a form of drug from a combination of acid and pcp, its also seen as being LSD crystals. The colour is black and effect is that all the impurities alter the trip so much that it's almost like PCP. We decided this name as rock stars are notoriously famous for being involved in the drug industry and rock musicians have connotations with being dark and grungey. After we discover the most popular band name through our focus group we then will decide which band name we want to use further.

Band Inspiration for Black Acid

The band which has inspired me for the name of Black Acid and type of band I want it to be is AC/DC.This rock band hasn't inspired in the way of the band members as I want to create a band with a mixture of males and females but has inspired me through their art work and type of music. AC/DC are an Australian hard rock band, formed in November 1973 by brothers Malcolm and Angus Young, who remained constant members until Malcolm's departure in 2014.Commonly referred to as a hard rock or blues rock band, they are also considered pioneers of heavy metal and are sometimes classified as such, though they have always dubbed their music as simply "rock and roll". To date they are one of the highest-grossing bands of all time.AC/DC underwent several line-up changes before releasing their first album, High Voltage, on 17 February 1975; Malcolm and Angus were the only original members left in the band. Membership subsequently stabilised until bassist Mark Evans was replaced by Cliff Williams in 1977 for the album Powerage. Within months of recording the album Highway to Hell, lead singer and co-songwriter Bon Scott died on 19 February 1980 after a night of heavy alcohol consumption. The group considered disbanding, but buoyed by support from Scott's parents, decided to continue and set about finding a new vocalist.Ex-Geordie singer Brian Johnson was auditioned and selected to replace Scott. Later that year, the band released the new album, Back in Black, which was made as a tribute to Bon Scott. The album launched them to new heights of success and became their all time best-seller, selling over 10,000 copies a day in its first week. AC/DC had sold more than 200 million records worldwide, including 71.5 million albums in the United States alone, making them the tenth-best-selling band in the United States and one of the world's best-selling bands of all time.

Content, form & style - A general description

Considered to be one of the biggest and most ambitious film projects ever undertaken, with an overall budget of $281 million (some sources say $310 million-$330 million), the entire project took eight years, with the filming for all three films done simultaneously and entirely in New Zealand, Jackson's native country. Each film in the series also had special extended editions released on DVD a year after their respective theatrical releases. While the films follow the book's general story-line, they do omit some of the novel's plot elements and include some additions to and deviations from the source material.

Set in the fictional world of Middle-earth, the films follow the hobbit Frodo Baggins (Elijah Wood) as he and a Fellowship embark on a quest to destroy the One Ring, and thus ensure the destruction of its maker, the Dark Lord Sauron. The Fellowship becomes divided and Frodo continues the quest together with his loyal companion Sam (Sean Astin) and the treacherous Gollum (Andy Serkis). Meanwhile, Aragorn (Viggo Mortensen), heir in exile to the throne of Gondor, and the wizard Gandalf (Ian McKellen) unite and rally the Free Peoples of Middle-earth in the War of the Ring.

The series was a major financial success, with the films collectively being among the highest-grossing film series of all time. The films were critically acclaimed and heavily awarded, winning 17 out of 30 total Academy Award nominations. The final film in the series, The Return of the King, won all of its 11 Academy Awards nominations, tying it with Ben-Hur and Titanic for most Academy Awards received for a film. The series received wide praise for its innovative special and visual effects.

The film is targeted at all races and nationality as its a film which is aimed at everyone from all ages, genders, races and nationality.

Psycho-graphic Profiling

Needs & Motivations: the needs and motivations of the audience who watches Lord Of The Rings would be somebody who is motivated educationally; would be somebody who is clever and educated. They also would be interested in fantasy fiction, trilogy's and outdoor activities.

Desires & Interests: the desires and interests of a Lord Of The Rings audience are films and televisions shows which are similar to the famous film. They would also be interested in sci-fi and fantasy for example films like Star Wars. The desires would be to live an adventurous and exciting life like that in the film, obviously not live like the characters in Lord Of The Rings but live a thrill-seeking and daring lifestyle. Some other interests they would have consist of adventurous activities, camping, fishing, bike riding, they also would have interests in 'geek

Beliefs & Attitudes: the beliefs and attitudes for the target audience of Lord Of The Rings would be somebody who not any stand out beliefs and just generally mostly likely a normal person with everyday beliefs and with an positive attitude which relates to the film as although it has a complex and in some parts sad story line it overall is a positive film with the use of good vs bad, good overpowering the bad and thriving and winning.

Cross Cultural Consumer Characteristics

Main-streamers: focus on stability and security, purchase familiar/trustworthy brands; believe status is achieved through conspicuous consumption. I think the audience who watches Lord Of The Rings goes under this term as although the film is based around an known mysterious world but because its a successful trilogy and so many people watch it and love it, its become a mainstream film which most people watch with all there family on an evening as it doesn't have a specific audience; anyone can watch it.  Which is why it goes under the term main-streamers, it also has become a familiar brand which is trustworthy and secure; people recognize the film brand and some people even buy merchandise under the Lord Of The Rings brand.

Lifestyle Marketing

Tribe/wired: digital, free-spirited, creative young singles. A lot of the audience who watches Lord Of The Rings will be under this term as its aimed at young people which refers to the actors in the film as a lot of them are young people. Also they'd be very creative as the film itself is really unique and imaginative; its aim at people with creative understanding. It also uses a lot of graphics throughout which relates to young people being into digital and technology.

Funatics: aspirational, fun-seeking, active, young. This term is very similar to tribe/wired as both terms refers to young fun seeking creative people. Due to the film being so action packed and energetic its aimed at people who are active and like being adventurous and thrill seekers.

Priority Parents: family values/activities, heavily interested in media consumption. A lot of the
target audience will refer to his term as it's a film which is widely watched with families as its aimed
at everyone and is the type of film which the majority of people can watch.

Rugged Traditionalists: trad male values, love of outdoors. The target audience could also go under
this term as primarily aimed at males and traditional males with a love of outdoors. Due to the film
being such an adventurous and thrill seeking style being who enjoy the love of outdoors would
mostly being interested in it.

I also think Lord Of The Rings is aimed at 'geeks' and I found information about this thought on a
website which said the following 'And the computer culture, by and large, is a world built
by engineers for engineers, by men for men. (This is a culture that found it natural to have "abort,
terminate, and fail" as three choices on a screen prompt.) Like Tolkien's world, most computer
games are about mastery through violence; they serve as a socialization into the computer culture for
adolescent boys.'

Finally the aspiring guitarist went on to university to get a degree in Sociology before deciding that he'd put his educational career on hold to focus on his life ambition of becoming a rock musician. Audience Profile

People who listen rock music vary from a wide range; teenagers, even some children, to adults in their 50's listen to this type of music. The older adult who enjoy listening to rock music tend to as it gives them reminisce their youth and music that was popular when they were younger and enjoying the life of a teenager. People in their 20's enjoy listening to this style of music because most successful bands are usually in their 20's, and that audience will be able to relate to their problems while understanding the maturity. Teenagers tend to listen to rock music as rock music tends to confront problems more than most other genres do, and will listen for someone to look up to or for comfort. Teenagers and even young adults, older people ect sometimes listen to rock music as a way of expressing themselves and portraying rebellion. Rock bands are notorious for being scandalous and causing controversy through drug use, sex and religion which is in a way appealing to some people as rock bands and musicians to stick to the rules; they do what they want, when they want and where they want. Something which people could idolise and look up to.

'Damien Jackson' - Damien is an 18 year old rock lover who really enjoys a range of music but specifically the style of rock. Damien is currently studying a Music Production degree at Brighton University where he plans to pursue his career in music. His dream is to become apart of a band as a guitarist as hes been playing the guitar since the age of 7. Damien lives around the area of Brighton which he was really glad to have grown up there as Brighton is famous for being a place which is quirky and edge, he feels he has developed his personality, style, likes/dislikes and hobbies through leaving in this location which he will always appreciate. He is highly confident, wild, outgoing, and fun-loving and lives life to the fullest. He's also courageous and not afraid to have a different opinion and really values individuality. Damien is also up for anything; adventure is the ‘norm’ for them. He celebrates a variety of music but specifically a passion for rock music, he takes it extremely seriously to the extent that one might call it a religion; a way of life. He doesn't blend in with society conformity because being unique is a key feature in the rock culture. Damien has multiple hobbies which consist of listening to a variety of music, attending concerts, gigs, festivals and clubs, playing his guitar to prepare for his future in a band, active/wild nightlife often attending parties and taking photography. Logo Design

In the lesson of Friday the 17th of October, the task was to create our band logo and/or the music companies logo. I decided to create a symbolic logo for our band's name as often rock musicians and group have a specific logo but as well as symbolise which people relate these bands to, for example The Rolling Stones use a red mouth/tongue to symbolise the famous band, Nivana uses a yellow smiley face, Misfits uses a white skull outline and The xx uses a thick white kiss/x as there bands symbol. I started my logo design with creating a few drafts on paper before straight away creating a logo on software as I wanted to fully design my logo first before jumping into actually creating it, also I felt I could get more inspiration through drafting ideas.

Examples of Rock Logo's

I really like these rock music logo's as they all relate to the specific bands, I feel logos are better as they are visually more exciting and make a band more unique and interesting. Some of my favourite logos are Misfits, Ramones, ACDC and Kiss.

Misfits Logo; Idea 1 Inspiration

One particular logo from a rock band which I really like and have got inspiration for my own band from is Misfits. The Misfits are an American band often recognized as the progenitors of the horror punk subgenre, blending punk rock and other musical influences with horror film themes and imagery. Founded in 1977 in Lodi, New Jersey by singer and songwriter Glenn Danzig, the group had a fluctuating lineup during its first six years with Danzig and bassist Jerry Only as the only consistent members. During this time they released several EPs and singles, and with Only's brother Doyle as guitarist, the albums Walk Among Us (1982) and Earth A.D./Wolfs Blood (1983), both considered touchstones of the early-1980s hardcore punk movement. The Misfits disbanded in 1983 and Danzig went on to form Samhain and then the eponymous Danzig. Several albums of reissued and previously unreleased material were issued after the group's dissolution, and their music became influential to punk rock, heavy metal, and alternative rock music of the late 1990s and early 2000s. The famous Misfits logo was inspired by two iconic trademarks from the horror film industry. The skull was appropriated from a poster for the film series ‘The Crimson Ghost.’ The typeface resembles that of the movie magazine ‘Famous Monsters of Filmland.’

Idea 1 Logo

This is the first logo idea design. Ellie and I based this idea on famous rock band Misfits as we really liked there typography which is unique and different. We really liked the grungy feel to the logo and the skull as well with the typography makes it look cool and scream rock and roll. We created our logo through Adobe Photoshop which we felt was the best software for creating our band logo. We searched through pages of font generating website 'Dafont' to find the perfect font for our first idea logo. The chosen font is called 'misfits' which ironically is the most similar font we found to the rock band Misfits. After we downloaded the font onto Photoshop we started created multiple different logo ideas using the same font. We played around with a few ideas like putting the two words from the band name onto of each other, next to each other and slightly apart intil we found the layout we best preferred. We found our favorite layout to be the zigzagged style as it looked similar to a rock logo and had a professional feel. We decided to experiment with adding symbols onto the typography as we thought it added a more interesting touch to the logo. We thought for a while what shape would look best and the most 'rocky'. We finally decided on a star symbol as we wanted our logo to look unique and after band research we found that the star symbol wasn't the most popular symbol used. Our chosen logo design for the first idea is the bottom logo as we felt it was overall the most professional logo and it looked the most grungy rock music style.

Led Zeppelin; Idea 2 Inspiration

The second band which Ellie and I got inspiration from for our second band design is from Led Zeppelin. We really liked the bands use of symbols and typography as we thought it was unique and interesting, also was a cool way of creating an iconic and memorable look to the band. Led Zeppelin was one of the first rock bands ever to use symbols rather then writing on album covers, art work and logos making the band become recognized and well known through these symbols. We decided we wanted to create a logo with the use of symbols as well as typography as we felt it would make the overall logo different and quirky. The symbols used in Led Zeppelins art work have relation to the genre of rock music with symbols which have involvement in the satanic religion ect so we felt we should incorporate this in our logo. Led Zeppelin were an English rock band formed in London in 1968. The group consisted of guitarist Jimmy Page, singer Robert Plant, bassist and keyboardist John Paul Jones, and drummer John Bonham. Their heavy, guitar-driven sound, rooted in blues on their early albums, has drawn them recognition as one of the progenitors of heavy metal, though their unique style drew from a wide variety of influences, including folk music. Led Zeppelin are widely considered one of the most successful, innovative and influential rock groups in history. They are one of the best-selling music artists in the history of audio recording; various sources estimate the group's record sales at 200 to 300 million units worldwide. With RIAA-certified sales of 111.5 million units, they are the second-best-selling band in the United States. Each of their nine studio albums placed on the Billboard Top 10 and six reached the number-one spot. Rolling Stone magazine described them as "the heaviest band of all time","the biggest band of the '70s"and "unquestionably one of the most enduring bands in rock history".They were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1995; the museum's biography of the band states that they were "as influential in that decade [the 1970s] as the Beatles were in the prior one". The band used symbols in their fourth album which they decided would be untitled and use symbols instead. The four symbols represented each band member which led to the album being referred to variously as the Four Symbols logo, Four Symbols, The Fourth Album, Untitled, Runes, The Hermit, and ZoSo (which was derived from Page's symbol).

Idea 2 Logo

This is our second logo design which we created through Adobe Photoshop and with the use of typography generating website 'Dafont'. We started the process by searching through several pages of Dafont to try and find the best font which relates to our Led Zeppelin inspiration and also has a style of rock. After searching for a while we finally found the best font which we thought looked original but also professional. After found the font we downloaded it onto our other fonts in Photoshop and started playing around with different logos, changing the font size, colour and also mixing up between lowercase and capital letter words. One of our first designs from our second logo idea was the most simplest as we were just firstly experimenting with the font. We placed the two words of 'black acid' next to each other and made the symbols which we used as similar to the actual letters so people who weren't aware of the band could read it and understand it. We liked the symbols which were in the font as they had a rock feel and looked like something used for a rock band. Some of other experiments with our second font was changing around the positioning of the words which wad done in the second version of the logo. We placed two words in a zig zag position, mixed up some of the symbols and also connected the two words so the logo looked joined together; we liked this version as we felt it was the most slick. Our final experiment was with mixing up the colour of the logo, before we kept it completely black which we didn't think was very exciting so we changed it to completely white with a black outline, this was our favorite experiment from idea 2 as we liked the idea of placing the white logo onto a black background for band art work.

Focus Group Research

As part of our research we were set the task to complete a focus group which gave us more information on our band and also let us understand what our target audience thoughts on the idea of Black Acid. These are the screen grabs from the presentation which we showed to our focus group so they got a clearer understanding of what our band is, the genre, the intentions and the overall idea and whether or not they like it and if its the style of band they would be interested in.

The feedback we got from our focus group was mixed. We started the focus group by discussing our bands genre and the bands which relate that genre, the feedback for this was positive as people agreed with our reasonings for choosing a band with the style of rock music. The focus group also thought we had a good mixture of bands we got inspiration from which we were pleased about. We also shared mind maps we created for our bands name and also our genre, we wanted our focus group to get a better understanding of the band we wanted to create. We went on to share our chosen band name which caused a mixed reaction. We originally were going to call our band 'Maleficent Youth' which we thought was a good name but didn't fit our style of rock as it was too feminine and mellow for a traditional rock band. So before our focus group we changed the name to 'Black Acid', at the time we thought we had found the perfect name as it was grungey and mysterious. It also just genuinely sounded like a name for a rock band so we felt confident that it would go down well with the focus group. When we discussed the name of 'Black Acid' with the focus group it lead to mixed emotions, some people really liked the name as they felt it fitted a rock band and the name related to rock musics culture. Others disagreed and felt it was overly rocky and sounded like a name for a metal band (similar to Slipknot and Metallica) which is the complete wrong genre of rock we were going for. Other people said it sounded too dark and could create a wrong impression to what we want our band. After hearing all this feedback we had taken it all on board and decided to change our band name to something which fitted the rock genre more. We asked the focus group some ideas and they came up with Black Chime, Black Diamonds and Rock Dynamics. We thought all these names were good but not 100% suited for our band so we decided to take on further research. We also shared the logo designs with the focus group where they all gave positive feedback saying how they thought the logo designs were good and actually looked like a logo you would see for a rock band. We were pleased with this feedback as we worked hard on our logo so wanted positive comments. We got a lot of useful information from our focus group and were overall pleased with the mixed comments as it allows us to improve on areas which are lacking and get a better understanding of our target audience.

Band Name Change

After we received our feedback from the focus group we decided to completely change the bands name. Although at first we were slightly disappointed with having to change the name as we originally really liked Black Acid but after taking the feedback into consideration we thought it was for the best. We started mindmapping a new name and also got help from our graphic lecturer Barry, who helped us a lot with thinking of a name. We looked at the Periodic Table to try and find some inspiration for our band name, we liked this idea as we thought it would make it sound unique and slightly strange which we were going for. We liked Zicon as its really unique but we thought it could sound to similar to Led Zeppelin. We mindmapped about the name, the logo and the CD as we were in a way back to square one. After researching and thinking for a while we finally found the name we were going to use, we decided on Rock Capacity as we think its a unique and catchy name. It's a two worded name which a lot of rock bands tend to do as it makes it sound more catchy and memorable. Rock obviously relates to our genre of band and people will straight away know that our band is of the genre of rock. Capacity means a variety of different things but we specifically looked at these two meanings; a. the ability to receive, hold, or absorb and b. a measure of this ability; volume. We feel pleased and confident with this name as its a lot more relatable to our style of band.

This is a photo of some of the notes we created when trying to think of a new band name.

Logo Change

This is our changed and final logo design. We decided to stick with the same style of logo using the same template we created for 'Black Acid'. However we changed the name after feedback from our focus group. We created our final logo design through the same process as we did with our other logo designs. Through Photoshop and using font generating website 'Dafont'. Ellie and I are pleased with our final logo design as we feel it truly shows our rock music influences and the research we did through rock bands. We feel this logo was our best which we created as the design looks professional and realistic as we used influences from Led Zeppelins symbol typography.

Final Logo Design

Photography

We were set a task during study week to take photographs for our artists album cover. During Study Week I went to Bristol for the weekend and whilst I was there I decided to actually take some photos because I found some really good areas which I felt looked like places a rock band would visit and would be seen in an album cover. I took a mixture of graffiti work, pubs, cafe's and some scenery which was disrupted as I thought it looked grungey and had a rock feel. These are some of my favorite photos I took which I will definitely be using in the Rock Capacity album cover. I will edit all these images on Photoshop to improve the overall quality.

CD Cover Design

This is our CD Cover Design which we created through Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator. All the images used on our CD Cover were our own photography. We felt the images we took had related to our genre which is why we thought they'd look best on our album cover. We got design inspiration from Black Sabbaths albums as they tend to use a variety of photography rather than just graphics.

This is our front cover of our CD cover design which we created through Photoshop and Illustrator, we edited the actual photo by increasing the photo quality, the contrast and the brightness. We used illustrator to incorporate the Rock Capacity over the original 'The Lanes' sign, we gained colours from the original sign and added them to the Rock Capacity design. This is another photo which we edited for our album cover, we increased the colour quality and changed the colours lines from blue to bright pink. We feel confident with these photos as we used original photography and edited it themselves.

Final CD Cover Design

EP MGMT Logo

This is our logo for Ellie and I's management company logo. We created the name 'EP' through combining our first letters of our names which we found created an interesting and unique management name. We created the actual logo through Adobe Illustrator and designed it around inspiration from previous logos we looked at. We feel confident with our logo as we feel its a professional looking logo and of a high quality standard.

Stick On Tattoos

Stick on tattoos was one media product Rock Capacity created. We thought stick on tattoos was an interesting and unique idea as rock bands have the connotations of tattoos. This is a light hearted and fun idea which wouldn't be taking 100% seriously, due to our target audience being younger people who wouldn't be covered in hundreds of tattoos we thought this would be just a fun thing for our target audience to do. I created the stick on tattoos through Photoshop and using the original font which we found on Dafont for our logo and experimenting with different letters, numbers, and shapes. We feel these tattoo designs are all different and will attract the target audience as its a unique and fun idea.

Poster

These are the Rock Capacity posters which use a range of our own photography and the bands logo. We decided to go for a simple and polished look as we wanted the posters to look sharp and defined. We created the posters in photoshop and illustrator to improve the photo quality and incorporate our logo.
